Karan was inspired to take up Taekwondo after seeing his family participate in the sport when he was just starting out in Reception at The Elms at five years old. Over the years, Karan has dedicated an enormous amount of time and effort to developing his talent. His commitment is now reaping the rewards, as he undertakes specialist training at the GB Olympic Academy in Manchester and travels around the world to compete. Karan’s upcoming competitions include the US Open in Las Vegas and the Belgium Open.

Karan has been selected to represent Great Britain on several occasions, most recently in November 2022 in the male team at European Cadet Championships in Malta where he had a fantastic experience and won through his fights narrowly missing out a place in the Quarter Finals. He is currently working towards a place in the forthcoming Junior European Championships to be held in Estonia later this year.

Supportive school environment

At Trent College, we deliver the highest levels of support enabling each pupil to fulfil their potential. For Karan and other high-performance athletes, this includes a flexible understanding to their commitments.

Mr Shorland, Head of Year 9 at Trent College explains, “Subject teachers understand that some individuals have busy and varied responsibilities outside of school and we work with the pupils to ensure they keep up to date with their academics, as well as progressing relevant opportunities within the school. The whole Year 9 cohort is extremely proud of what Karan is achieving in his Taekwondo. Alongside his success, he demonstrates a fantastic attitude to learning.”

Our tutors play a leading role in providing pastoral care for all pupils, Karan explains how his tutor plays an invaluable role, “Miss Robinson-Plain helps me a lot. She works with me to find the right balance and helps me to manage my time efficiently.”

Digital approach to learning

As a school, Trent College utilises Microsoft Teams for effective online learning and to enable pupils to manage their own workloads. Commenting on the digital approach, Karen explains, “Teams is really helpful at keeping me on track with my academics. At a quick glace I can see what work I have which helps me to prioritise.”

Part of community

Friendship is at the heart of our happy school community and for Karan, his friends are an essential part of his support network. They are proud and supportive of his achievements and keep in touch when he is away from school.

Karan is also part of the Trent College A team for Rugby, where he enjoys playing as part of a large team and has inspired him to play locally for his club side Ilkeston RFC.

Prioritising pastoral care

Our excellent pastoral care supports every pupil in the school to achieve their full potential, supporting them to flourish in an inspiring environment that champions the individual.
