What are we really preparing young people for?
Of course, we want our pupils to do brilliantly at school. We want them to enjoy learning, be inspired by excellent teachers, discover subjects they love and achieve results that open doors. But education has to prepare them for what comes afterwards too.
At Trent College, we talk about developing Practical Wisdom: helping young people to develop the knowledge, character and judgement to make good decisions, when the answer isn’t always obvious. It is about knowing when to be brave, when to listen, when to keep going and when to change course.
We think about this through three qualities: Courage, Care and Purpose.
The Courage to stretch yourself, take a risk and learn when things don’t go to plan. The Care to notice other people, listen properly and build strong relationships. And the Purpose to discover what matters to you and how you might make a contribution.
We want those qualities to develop everywhere at Trent.
They grow in classrooms, through the satisfaction of understanding something difficult and the confidence that comes from doing something better than you thought you could. But they grow outside the classroom too.
Our campus gives us a wonderful opportunity to get young people outdoors: exploring, competing, working together, taking sensible risks and experiencing adventure. Alongside sport, music, drama, service and the many other parts of school life, outdoor education gives pupils the chance to discover things about themselves and each other that are difficult to learn sitting behind a desk.
That balance matters more than ever.
Our pupils are growing up in a world transformed by technology and AI. They need to understand and use those tools with confidence, while developing the very human qualities that matter beyond them: curiosity, judgement, conversation, friendship, resilience and the ability to get on with people. We want our pupils to learn to thrive on screen and off it.
For me, that is where the real value of a Trent education lies. Academic success matters enormously, but so does what young people learn through friendships, challenges, muddy shoes, performances, matches, conversations, mistakes and opportunities they never expected to have.
We want them to leave us well qualified, certainly, but also ready for the real world: interesting and interested young people, comfortable in their own skin and ready to play their part in the world around them.
With the Courage to grow, the Care to belong and the Purpose to contribute.
The best way to understand Trent, of course, is to come and see it for yourself. Talk to our staff, walk around our campus and, most importantly, spend some time with our pupils. They tell the story of Trent far better than any website can.

The Elms
Our strength lies in the belief that every child is a unique individual, and the school aims to put the children at the heart of everything we do; releasing their potential within a safe, supportive and challenging environment.
In our recent ISI Inspection, our early years provision was rated as Outstanding, and I am proud to be leading The Elms to maintain these excellent standards and to continue its development to deliver a first-class education from the very outset of our pupils’ journey.
The Elms begins in the Nursery where learning through play and exploration builds confidence and curiosity about the world around them. Transition to Pre-School is an exciting time during which specialist subject teaching starts and staff ensure that every child has the skills and confidence to start their Elms journey in Reception. As children progress through the school, the focus on exceptional pastoral care and inspirational teaching, along with a vast array of enrichment opportunities, ensure that our children leave us with the independence and resilience to embark successfully upon their senior school education. Firm foundations and a love of learning are built along the way to ensure future success in all that they do.
Our children are happy and feel valued, ensuring that high academic standards are achieved. We have a large and dedicated team of talented teachers and teaching assistants, who are supported by many subject specialists. The vibrant learning environment and excellent resources mean that children are provided with a first-rate education in which they can discover and develop their individual talents to flourish and succeed in a rapidly changing world.
