sports at the elms

Pupils experience a range of sports from the start of their school journey to Year 6. All pupils benefit from extended time for sport and physical activity which is over and above the national curriculum of two hours of PE each week. At The Elms pupils enjoy three lessons of sports each week totalling three hours, which means an extra 36 hours of sport over the academic year.

  • Years 1-4 participate in a swimming, PE and Games lessons
  • Year 5 and 6 enjoy a lesson of PE and two Games lessons

In addition after school clubs are also offered at Key Stage 1 in karate, dance and soccer and at Key Stage 2 in hockey, netball, rugby, running, tennis and swimming.

PE lessons are held in our refurbished Activity Hall with band-new gymnastic equipment and games take place across the campus on the sports fields and Astro turf.

pe and games

PE lessons focus on individual development in contrast to the Games lessons which focus on sport performance and the team environment. During Games pupils are not only enhancing their ability on the sports pitch, but they are also developing a strong set of transferable skills by taking pride in their performance, demonstrating clear communication and remaining committed to hard work and teamwork.

the elms swimming steps

With an onsite swimming pool and a newly developed swimming programme ‘The Elms Swimming Steps’, children can now begin the valuable skills of learning to swim from Year 1. Swimming lessons are held weekly by an external swimming specialist. The programme encourages confidence in the water and strong and happy swimmers.

Introducing swimming a year earlier at The Elms is just one of many examples of how our sporting philosophy is committed to equipping every child with the confidence and enthusiasm to enjoy sport and a healthy and active lifestyle.
