National Swimming Finals – Saturday 8 June

Qualifying for the final at the London Aquatics Centre was no easy task itself but the reward of competing at the 2012 Olympic swimming venue was all the encouragement Gabriel from Year 5 needed to secure his place in the 25m breaststroke.

The day saw tough competition from the best of the 4634 competitors from 285 schools across the length and breadth of the country and abroad.

Gabriel swam a personal best of 20.21 seconds taking almost 1 and half seconds off his qualifying time! Despite the fantastic swim, Gabriel unfortunately missed out on a place in the final by one place but did finish an impressive 11th in the country.

Commenting on the day, Gabriel said, “It was an amazing experience and on the blocks it felt weird as a famous Olympic swimmer could have stood on them as well.”

National Golf Championships – Tuesday 11 June

Isobel in Year 6 also represented the school with pride, despite terrible weather conditions, out on the Macdonald Hill Valley Golf Club in Shropshire.

Isobel achieved the silver medal in the girls’ competition, after shooting a superb 42 points. The gap was extremely small between 1st and 2nd place, in fact both girls scored the same in points resulting in a count back taking place over the last six holes.

Commenting on the week, Mrs Penty, Head of Sport at The Elms, said, “It was a fantastic achievement to have two pupils from The Elms reaching such prestigious finals against extremely tough competition. The whole school community is extremely proud of them both.”
