Mr Young

Class teacher

Joined The Elms: 2006

Pastoral and safeguarding responsibilities

In his role as Assistant Leader and Pastoral Lead for Juniors, Mr Young acts as deputy to Mrs Deller, Deputy Head Pastoral, to ensure and deliver pastoral excellence. He is an integral part of the school welfare team, where he monitors, tracks and implements support for pupils as required. His work in pastoral interventions involves collaborating with outside agencies to provide additional support when necessary. This in-depth knowledge aligned perfectly with taking on the additional role of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead for The Elms to ensure all pupils are happy, healthy, safe and excelling.

A further responsibility includes managing transitions for children moving from Year 2 to Year 3, as well as those transitioning from Year 6 at The Elms to Year 7 Trent College. Mr Young is also responsible for overseeing after-school clubs, including staffing, scheduling, and allocating pupils to appropriate clubs.

PSHE Subject Leader

Mr Young is pivotal in shaping the PSHE curriculum as the Subject Leader at The Elms. He oversees the planning, professional development (INSET), monitoring and delivery of lessons. His responsibilities include conducting lesson observations, monitoring lesson plans and ensuring that classroom displays and curriculum coverage meet our high standards.

Class Teacher

In addition to his leadership roles, Mr Young is a dedicated class teacher. He is committed to inspiring and caring for his pupils, ensuring that lessons are thoughtfully planned, engaging, and thought-provoking. With experience teaching almost every year group at The Elms, Mr Young brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of pupil needs to his classroom.

Passion for Sport

Outside of school, Mr Young has various sporting interests stemming from a football scholarship in America and playing football for England at 19 years old. Over the years, he has become a Football Association (FA), Rugby Football Union (RFU) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) qualified coach.

With this experience and insight, Mr Young is in a fantastic position to coach the U11 school football team alongside other staff members. On numerous occasions, the team has for qualified for the national finals as well as achieving 6th place at the Independent Schools competition at St George’s Park.

Mental Health First Aider

As a certified Mental Health First Aider, Mr Young is trained to offer early interventions and manage difficult situations involving both pupils and staff members. He plays a crucial role in signposting appropriate resources and support, ensuring the wellbeing of the school community.

Highlights

Residential trips are always a highlight of the academic year for Mr Young who views them as an essential part the primary school education as they teach so many life skills. During his time at The Elms, Mr Young has attended trips in France, Dublin, Isle of Wight and all-around England. He particularly enjoys seeing the children form new friendships and overcoming fears / challenges.
