English Subject Leader
Mr Young is pivotal in shaping the English curriculum as the English Subject Leader for Juniors at The Elms. He oversees the planning, professional development (INSET), monitoring and delivery of English lessons across Year 3 to Year 6. His responsibilities include conducting lesson observations, monitoring lesson plans and ensuring that classroom displays and curriculum coverage meet our high standards.
Mr Young is dedicated to ensuring comprehensive coverage of written skills across the junior year groups, from this, he has developed the criteria for our Pen Licence, a programme designed to help parents and children understand the expectations for handwriting proficiency.
Assistant Leader and Pastoral Lead for Juniors
In his role as Assistant Leader and Pastoral Lead for Juniors, Mr Young serves as deputy to Mrs Deller, Deputy Head Pastoral, to ensure and deliver pastoral excellence. He is an integral part of the school welfare team, where he monitors, tracks, and implements support for pupils as required. His work in pastoral interventions involves collaborating with outside agencies to provide additional support when necessary. A further responsibility includes managing transitions for children moving from Year 2 to Year 3, as well as those transitioning from Year 6 at The Elms to Year 7 Trent College. Mr Young is also responsible for overseeing after-school clubs, including staffing, scheduling, and allocating students to appropriate clubs.
Class Teacher
In addition to his leadership roles, Mr Young is a dedicated class teacher. He is committed to inspiring and caring for his pupils, ensuring that lessons are thoughtfully planned, engaging, and thought-provoking. With experience teaching almost every year group at The Elms, Mr Young brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of pupil needs to his classroom.
Passion for Sport
Outside of school, Mr Young has various sporting interests stemming from a football scholarship in America and playing football for England at 19 years old. Over the years, he has become a Football Association (FA), Rugby Football Union (RFU) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) qualified coach.
With this experience and insight, Mr Young is in a fantastic position to coach the U11 school football team alongside other staff members. On numerous occasions, the team has for qualified for the national finals as well as achieving 6th place at the Independent Schools competition at St George’s Park.
Mental Health First Aider
As a certified Mental Health First Aider, Mr Young is trained to offer early interventions and manage difficult situations involving both pupils and staff members. He plays a crucial role in signposting appropriate resources and support, ensuring the wellbeing of the school community.
Highlights
Residential trips are always a highlight of the academic year for Mr Young who views them as an essential part the primary school education as they teach so many life skills. During his time at The Elms, Mr Young has attended trips in France, Dublin, Isle of Wight and all-around England. He particularly enjoys seeing the children form new friendships and overcoming fears / challenges.
